چکیده

We compare the effectiveness of uniform versus non-uniform waveband switching under the dual cost metrics of switching requirements and fiber capacity. We consider a star topology and begin by characterizing the optimal performance frontier achievable under no restrictions on waveband sizing, and provide algorithms employing non-uniform waveband sizing that approach or achieve this optimum. We then consider the special case of uniform waveband sizing, and show that the performance compares very favorably. We also extend our results to general topologies. 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Wavelength Continuous Wdm Networks with Non-uniform Service Rates

Many circuit switched networks have stationary state probabilities which depend on the arrival and service rates only through their ratio. This paper shows that this is not the case for WDM networks without wavelength conversion, and for cellular mobile networks, and investigates the implications for fast simulation techniques.

Minimizing delay and packet loss in single-hop lightwave WDM networks using TDMA schedules

We consider packet-switched lightwave WDM networks with stations equipped with tunable transmitters and xed receivers. Access to each of the available channels is controlled by a weighted TDMA scheme, whereby the channels are not necessarily shared equally among the various sources. In this paper we study the problem of designing TDMA frames to minimize the mean packet delay, as well as the mea...

Packet Scheduling in WDM Ring Networks with Non-uniform Traffic Demands and Arbitrary Transceiver Tuning Latencies

This paper considers the scheduling problem of packet transmissions in a TDM/WDM unidirectional optical ring network. Our objective is to design a scheduling scheme for packet transmission with minimum scheduling length satisfying a set of traffic requirements. We focus on a fairly general case in that non-uniform traffic demands and arbitrary transmitter tuning latencies are allowed. Since the...

A Contention-Free Tbit/sec Packet-Switching Architecture for ATM over WDM Networks

Future high-speed switches and routers will be expected to support a large number of ports at high line rates carrying traffic with diverse statistical properties. Accordingly, scheduling mechanisms will be required to handle Tbit/sec aggregated capacity while providing quality of service (QoS) guarantees. In this paper a novel high-capacity switching scheme for ATM/WDM networks is presented. T...

Design of OWns: Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Network Simulator

Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) technology is a very promising candidate to harness the enormous bandwidth offered by the optical fiber. WDM networks are being actively considered for deployment in future Wide Area Network (WAN) environments such as the Next Generation Internet, in order to satisfy the high bandwidth and low latency demands. A proper performance evaluation of the ...
